AI and Metadata: Networking Lunch
The IET Media Technical Network is pleased to sponsor an afternoon of presentations and discussion on the latest in AI and Metadata at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, hosted by Janet Greco, Broadcast Projects, on Friday, 21st February, from 13:00 to 15:00 at the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Savoy Place, London.
This lunch features some of the leading experts working with AI-driven technologies in media supply chain management from commission to distribution. The conversation will specifically focus on AI-driven technologies used to automatically extract metadata for the purpose of content recommendation and personalisation, including defining the operational paths to better metadata and workflow management, as well as offering the opportunity to network with similarly minded persons from the industry at large.
The past five years have seen groundbreaking developments in AI-driven technologies that are driving a new wave of disruption in the media supply chain, touching upon everything from commissioning to distribution.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the term we often use when we mean Machine Learning and a host of other innovative technologies that are still at the early stages of development and deployment within the media industry. New metadata extraction technologies also include computer vision, speech to text, automatic translation and are all on course to bring transformative benefits to the TV business.
The need for accurate and comprehensive metadata has been a recognised requirement in the industry for a long time, especially relating to content management, navigation and search.
But siloed work practices in place, particularly at legacy operators, mean huge challenges to merge, validate and arrive at a single “meta-truth” of data across the enterprise.
AI is also being employed to help with the management of archives – from media asset management to the monetization and streamlined delivery of content assets. As programming sits at the core of any TV business more efficient content management processes have become critical to future proofing the business.
Some of the boldest work in AI and Metadata is not surprisingly being overseen by the EBU Metadata Developer Network, hosted by the European Broadcasting Union, Europe’s representative body for public service media.
Media information management forms part of their strategic program on production and aims to help TV businesses enhance and enrich their media by integrating their data (descriptive and technical, but also subtitles) from commissioning to distribution. Use cases are expansive, from using facial recognition to speed up editing processes, enabling new forms of creativity in production or automating the creation of subtitles and translations.
But one thing that stands out in all these demos is the fact that these systems must be meticulously trained. The state of the art is advancing all the time, but metadata management has at its core a fundamental requirement: unique IDs. Finding the way to unify disparate systems is intrinsically linked to this core requirement, but so is managing the human element and workflows.
Sponsored by IET Media in association with Janet Greco of Broadcast Projects, this Networking Lunch will facilitate connections with some of the leading practitioners in AI and Metadata who will talk about their work and technology choices and share their experiences and views on the hype vs reality of AI in the media content supply chain.
As special addition to the event, a representative from the EBU Metadata Developer Network, Jean-Pierre Evain, will discuss the progress in various machine learning technologies and their application to media businesses. We are also delighted to welcome Hanna Lukashevich, Head of Semantic Music Technologies, at Fraunhofer IDMT, who will be giving an impulse talk Automatic Metadata Extraction (AME).
