NAB New York Show Preview 2019

NABShow New York  2019 kicks off this week and the event’s major theme will be next generation TV. Here’s a show preview of the event which takes place at the Javits Center in New York City, 16 -17 October 2019.

Free Sessions at NAB New York

Over 50 free sessions will be offered on the exhibition floor, free for all to attend. Check out the full schedule here. Featured sessions include:

ATSC 3.0 “Next Generation TV”, the new standard bringing internet functionality and addressable TV to the mix for traditional broadcasters will be hosting its own booth and panel to provide insight on implementation plans from stations groups and consumer electronic companies as they get ready to launch new next-gen TV sets and receivers.

As many stations are still working out the implementation challenges, ATSC will host a panel to address the question of station readiness for deployment. One of many free sessions on the show floor, ATSC 3.0 Ad Targeting Update: Deployment Timetable and Monetization Potential takes place on Thursday October 17th at 3.45pm.

You can also learn about the new storytelling features that Next Generation TV promises for content producers. The session will also address how ATSC 3.0 will allow broadcasters to protect their premium content. Producing and Protecting Content in ATSC 3.0 will take place Thursday 17th October from 12.30 to 1pm.

Also on the agenda covering ATSC developments is the Nationwide ATSC 3.0 Emergency Alert Service now being built in Korea, how ATSC 3.0 will help in diversifying revenue streams, and the business of investing and capitalizing on ATSC 3.0.

Shifting to the creative side, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer and playwright Billy Porter will receive the the 2019 NAB Show New Impact Award from Gordon H. Smith, President and CEO of the National Assocation of Broadcasters. The star of “Pose” will be honored for his decades of success as an entertainer and breakthrough performance on Thursday 17th October at 1.45pm.

You can also hear from the creatives behind “Russian Doll” the popular Netflix series, discuss how they employed the latest technologies including the use of 6k cameras, HDR imagery, 4K delivery and other advanced tools that are revolutionizing post-production.  The series has been nominated for 13 Emmy Awards. How Tech Serves Art in Netflix’s Russian Doll takes place Thursday October 17th at 3.30-4pm.

Four Conference Tracks

There are four targeted paid programs which focus on the main industry trends as well as training.

  • The Digital Leadership Academy offers training in digital news, sales and production.

  • The Post-Production Conference NYC offers training on the workflow from shooting to post production.

  • The Streaming Summit, the business and technology of OTT Video, will feature keynote speaker Marc DeBevoise, President and COO of CBS Interactive, who will discuss the latest trends from the OTT industry including original content, monetization, direct-to-consumer and the future of live, SVOD and VOD streaming services. This two-day event features 75 speakers from the broadcast, media and publishing industries covering the technical and business challenges and opportunities in packaging, monetizing and distributing online video.

  • TV2020: Monetizing the Future will explore the profit potential of all the new emerging opportunities through conversations with C-Suite executives. Topics include the potential of new revenue from advanced advertising, OTT and ATSC 3.0, as well as the IP transition, cloud operations and sales automation.

Workshops for Creatives

Two separate field workshops for editors and content creators will also be offered during the show. These are immersive, hands-on field training and classroom style workshops. The two major themes focus on how companies are building in-house production teams to create ongoing content for the brands, products and services with very small crews and equipment that has gotten better but less expensive. Small-to-No-Crew: Corporate and In-House Productions and Small-to-No-Crew: Cinematic Lighting are separate paid-for events and take place off-site during the show.

The NABShow Podcast

Finally, the NABShow podcast hosted by MediaVillage’s E.B. Moss previews the show and gives a flavor of all you can expect at NAB Show New York.  Podcast episodes cover ATSC 3.0, cloud technology, talks with the creative production teams behind Marvel’s Wolverine and documentary Apollo 11, participatory media, a chat with Vimeo about OTT, e-sports, in-vehicle entertainment experiences, the future of cinema and Insights from academy award winning editor William Goldenberg, plus content creation and what’s new in AI.
